2021 MSSA INTERCLUB SERIES MEET 2 - LC

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

Today was the 2nd meet of the winter series for Masters Swimming SA. It is an unusual time with multiple states in lockdown and SA being in restrictions due to Covid-19. Interclub 2 was planned as a National series meet where interstate swimmers were expected to compete.

This meet was untapered and morale was low due to the cold morning starts, long course pool, and constant Covid updates regarding restrictions and lockdowns, nevertheless, 13 of our swimmers braved the cold and represented the blue and green this morning.

It's been a while since the club has swum at a long course pool and it was good to see some fast times recorded. Shelby Gristede had a big day on Sunday with 2 back to back swims in the 400m Freestyle and the 100m Freestyle before heading off to Handorf for her Football game in the wet and cold conditions. Shelby swam an amazing 400m Freestyle coming in at a time of 5:08.96 which is 11.29 seconds faster than her previous personal best.

Next up, we had the 100m Freestyle where Liam McHugh made his Masters debut. Liam came home strong in his back end of the 100m Freestyle and overtook Andrew who turned first at the 50m mark but wasn't able to keep up with Liam on the home stretch to be out-touched by 1.3 seconds.

You would have missed Nick Tam in the 50m Breastroke if you blinked. Nick swam an exceptional race and achieved a state record with a time of 31.16. He is eyeing off the national record of 30.45 at Interclub 3... Watch this space.

Alvin Fu was 0.02s off his own state record in the 50m Backstroke with a time of 30.04. He will be aiming to break the 30s barrier again at the next meet in August. He's hungry for more records.

By far the best race of the meet (century even) would have to go to Chelsea in the 200m IM with her friends cheering her on in the stands. Chelsea Robinson is swimming in lane 7 next to Andrew Truong in lane 8. Both swimmers has very different race plans where Chelsea would make her move in the Breastroke leg and return strong in the last 50m using her amazing stamina as a middle distance specialist whereas, Andrew likes to go out hard in his best leg in the Butterfly and hold off in the second 50m heading into his dreaded and weakest leg, Breastroke, and hope for the best on the home stretch. Andrew was ahead of the whole field in the Butterfly leg and out-touched Alvin by 0.71s and had a 6s lead on Chelsea. He was able to extend this lead further to 8s after the backstroke leg.... this was when Chelsea made her move and reclaim some distance back and was only 4s behind Andrew at the last turn. Chelsea turned the burners on and used the cheers from the stands to help her swim straight past Andrew in the last 25m touching in with a time of 2:39.01 claiming a state record while beating her coach who touched with a time of 2:40.07. It was a race you did not want to miss.

Jordie had an exceptional meet and achieve great times. Jordie Parker was able to swim a PB in the 50m Freestyle touching in with a time of 34.10 which is 0.68s faster than her time at state short course. An unbelievable result. Jordie will only get faster from here on out.

Here's another close race that Andrew was in again. Jack Jackson is swimming in lane 7 and Andrew in Lane 8 for the 50m Freestyle. Andrew had the advantage of having Jack swimming on his breathing side and was able to keep an eye closely on Jack the whole length of the pool. Both swimmers were neck to neck down the pool and it was down to the last 10m where Andrew kept his head down and powered home with a short final half stroke touching the wall in a time of 28.05 to Jack's 28.11. It was a photo finish race.
