Today was the big day the club has been waiting for. Masters Swimming SA (MSSA) SC State Cup held at SA Aquatic & Leisure Centre (SAALC). UniSA Swimming Club has grown exponentially with 31 new members in March alone. The club now has 26 members representing the club at Masters Swimming SA. 24 of the 26 were able to attend MSSA State Cup today. We were the youngest club at States but the 2nd biggest attendance. Phoenix Masters started their Affiliation with MSSA last year in 2020 and had 26 total swimmers representing them today. We knew it will be a close on which club will take out the State Cup. It was neck to neck all day with each club taking turns leading the point score. After event 4, we were leading the field with 323 with Phoenix trailing right behind us on 317. UniSA Swimming Club knew we had to dig hard but it would be difficult due to our young team stealing points from each other as we had 8 males and 8 females in the same age group. The club had some hurdles to overcome leading into the meet and throughout today. Swimmers traveling interstate from covid hotspots, to injuries which put them out of some swims, to having to stay back to finish off the relays before heading to other commitments afterward. It was a busy and hectic few weeks heading into the event but it all sorted itself out. There were a few State and National records broken including our 4x25m Medley Relay teams with the girls smashing the state record by 5.76 seconds and national record by 1.77 seconds going out on a 1:00.39 (Allana, Emma, Shelby, and Chelsea) and the boys smashing the state and national record by a whopping 2.39 seconds touching in with a time of 50.04 (Nick, Alvin, Andrew, Ethan). The girls will be planning to go under the minute while boys will come back to try to go sub-50s. Every swimmer was a standout and it's hard to pick swimmers to write about. But a special mention will need to go to Ethan Crook who is part of the UniSA Elite Athlete & Performer Program and currently Swimming for Starplex Swim Club. Ethan will be flying out this week to go to Nationals in Gold Coast where he will be racing big names like Kyle Chalmers and Cam McEvoy. Ethan is also planning on competing at Olympic Trials held at SAALC in June. Ethan swam some great times having PB in all his races and smashing National records left, right, and center. This will set Ethan up well against the big names at Nationals and Trials. A big congratulations to the following swimmers for taking part in 2021 MSSA SC State Cup: 18-24 Female
