Proclamation Classic Open Water Swim

Open water swim 3 days after the Christmas feast was tough. Gained about 2-3kg over the holiday break and now we're back in the water with no training over the last 18 days.

UniSA saw 5 swimmers, Andrew, Liam, Samuel, Radek, and Kim. Eli planned on swimming but Covid had other plans at the last minute. Liam, Samuel, and Radek all swam the 2km whilst Andrew and Kim swam the 1km. Water conditions on the day were relatively flat.

the 3km swimmers went out first followed by the 1km swimmers. Liam had a strong start keeping up with Chris and Emily who are both non-members but are open water specialists. It was a tough race for Liam. Liam ended up 3rd overall behind the 2 specialists and not too far behind the 1 lapper Andrew. Andrew went out in clear water but needed to hang on in the last back stretch of the race. Andrew felt confident as he passed some of the 3km swimmers... until he saw Chris swim past him from the 2km swimmers and there was no sign of him slowing down. Andrew had to pick up the pace as he knew Emily and Liam were trailing closely behind. As the race was coming to an end, Andrew saw Emily right behind him followed by Liam. The 2km swimmers had a strong battle on their hand and their mission was to complete the course twice before some could finish it once. It was amazing to watch.

The Sztolc family had a race of their own. Samuel had an issue with navigation yet again although we spent some time on the jetty prior to the race to map the course and familiarise with how to approach it. Samuel somehow ended up swimming in the wrong direction for a short period of time which may have cost him a spot above his dad. It was a close finish with 27 seconds apart.
